I personally think it's crazy that a company as big and generally successful as McDonalds is having this kind of struggle. I was never aware how bad McDonalds was actually doing and the fact that they haven't posted growth in the U.S. since 2013 is actually quite astonishing. I think McDonalds made the right choice getting rid of the previous CEO as he really didn't do anything good for the company. There was only 1 percent increase in shares compared to almost 30 percent from other Dow Jones companies and no economic growth are two very worrying signs and I'm surprised it took this long for McDonalds to make the decision to move on to someone new.
I don't find it surprising that McDonald's are doing this poorly. By being the biggest and most well-known fast food chain, they are going to consistently get attacked by their competitors. As CEO, Don Thompson didn't do well but I don't think those numbers are that bad. Things like the chicken wing promotion and poor sales are not only his fault but the whole marketing and sales divisions too. I personally feel as though in the next few years all fast food chains will face tough challenges as the public start to focus more on healthy eating. Of course, these companies will move to healthier food options but the stigma surrounding fast food will take some time to eradicate.
